It is a tale told by an idiot: MACBETH

“Bubble bubble toil and trouble.” These words are not only used as part of a song in the Harry Potter movies but are uttered by the witches in Shakespeare’s Macbeth. It is indeed a play about toil and trouble. The witches prophesy Macbeth’s toil and trouble, from his greatness to his fall. They are the personification of fortune and almost function as a chorus as we learn from the very beginning that they would like to mess with Macbeth. Thus, they plant the idea of power into Macbeth’s head, which is then transformed into a lust for blood by Macbeth’s wife, Lady Macbeth. The latter persuades her husband to kill King Duncan in order to seize the crown. Guided by the dagger, Macbeth fulfills his destiny and uses the dagger to kill everyone who stands in his way. Deprived by friends and allies, he turns mad and draws the very nihilistic conclusion:

Tomorrow, and tomorrow, and tomorrow,
Creeps in this petty pace from day to day,
To the last syllable of recorded time;
And all our yesterdays have lighted fools
The way to dusty death. Out, out, brief candle!
Life’s but a walking shadow, a poor player,
That struts and frets his hour upon the stage,
And then is heard no more. It is a tale
Told by an idiot, full of sound and fury,
Signifying nothing.
